How cool would it be to open up a coffeeshop? Not just any old kind of coffeeshop but a different one. I imagine one built around the idea of creating a community or even attempting to build a culture around it. Honestly the following is just the kind of coffeeshop that I'd like to frequent. Here is the idea:
Name: MediaMind, OtherBrain, MetaHead (a space for auditory, visual, cerebral, spiritual, communicative exploration) -- "Come Be Yourself"
First the general ideas:
-No chairs in the place -- only couches as they are conducisive to people meeting each other.
-A big bulletin board that is featured prominently. The flyers would be taken down each week or every two weeks maybe.
-Free Wi-fi
-A small free library section where people can leave used books and others can pick them up. The catch would be that all submitted books would need to have a review written about them by the person who dropped them off. Encourage second and third generation reviews.
-A raised stage where the seats for the audience would be a series of incrementally raised couches. Stadium seating of sorts, except with big old funky couches picked up from freecycle and craigslist.
-A conference room/study room/art space with an ink board.
The Money Makers:
-Simple CD trade. Buy used CD's for 3 dollars (or 4 dollars if they agree to spend the money in-store) and sell them for 5. Simple, straightforward, and honest. I'd also like to have maybe four audio stations where a person can drop in a used cd and check it out.
-Sell fair-trade coffee, sandwiches, pastries, etc
-Small computer lab using maybe four mac mini's, 5 dollars for every 30 minutes, first 10 minutes free
-Sell sweatshop-free union made tshirts/hats/scarves/gloves; some logo free, some with funky unique sayings or quotes applied using a profressional press.
-Tshirt press for wholesale orders to schools/teams/companies/organizations
-Sound studio for super cheap, maybe 100 bucks for 3 hours. It'd be cool to window one whole wall of the studio with sound proof glass and make a space for people to chill and watch the bands working. Maybe pump the sound from inside through speakers to the observation room.
-Hold art showings for local artists where none of the art can be sold for more that 50 bucks. 80% to the artist, 10% to the shop and 10% back out to stimulate art community.
-hold funky game contests like Boggle, Rock Paper Scissors, Catch-Phrase and so on
Promotion:
-Hand out flyers at the art schools in the area requesting help decorating the walls on a given saturday for a couple hours. Seriously, think about it. Your advertising to the very people that such a place would appeal to, and all the talk they would do about how they got to throw paint around and glue things to the walls is some major word of mouth....not to mentioned it could look awesome and it would stimulate the community.
-Give local bands free time in the studio in exchange for equal time performing for free.
-Previously mentioned art showings
And the place? Who knows. Obvioiusly I'm in Tampa and a flip through the commercial real estate leaves much to be desired. But toally dreaming? How does 2000 square feet plus more for storage, 20 ft ceiling, brick inside and out, a street side entrance, 80 yards from a waterfront park, and a stones throw form the commercial hub of the city sound?
A man can dream.
